PAST EVENTS

July 10-11 & 17-18, 2009 - Is there ANYBODY OUT THERE?

Open Circle Theatre participated in The Capital Fringe Festival with a new cabaret: Is there ANYBODY OUT THERE? at Flashpoint’s Mead Theatre Lab in DC.

HOW DO WE COMMUNICATE and what the hell do we have to say? A group of disabled and non-disabled performers wrestled with this simple question with song and sign.  Suzanne Richard, OCT’s Artistic Director and a Helen Hayes Outstanding Director nominee, directed Is there ANYBODY OUT THERE?  with the same fresh, fun, and thoughtful viewpoint that she applies to all of her projects.

Director: Suzanne Richard
Music Director: Stuart Weich

August 22- September 13, 2008 – Story Theatre

Our major production for the year at Round House Theatre Silver Spring, Paul Sills’ Story Theatre is based on Grimm’s Fairy Tales and Aesop’s Fables. With an ensemble of 16 actors, with and without disabilities, we will create a production concept using Viola Spolin’s improvisational techniques and theatre games. As an example, these stories could be told as if the television came to life involving current media figures, or as if patients and staff of an isolated 1940’s hospital ward face some sort of catalyst which causes them to begin telling each other stories.

August 2007 – Songs For A New World by Jason Robert Brown

Featured the work of Jason Robert Brown rearranged to tell the story of two soldiers serving in Iraq and their families at home.

Director Suzanne Richard
Music Director Zak Sandler
Choreography Liz Lerman’s Dance Exchange

June 2007 - The Farthest Earth from Thee
A Suite of Sonnets

Commissioned by VSA arts, the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, in consultation with Open Circle Theatre, performs an original work inspired by Shakespeare’s sonnets. The production features company and guest dancers with and without disabilities. Shakespeare revealed intense, intimate, and moving relationships through his sonnets.  This collection of contemporary dances transforms his words into explosive movement and vibrant video images.

June 2007 – You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown

Commissioned for the VSA arts Start with the Arts Family Festival and performed at Columbus Circle at Union Station.

Open Circle Theatre’s concert version of Clark M. Gesner’s script, based on the comic strip by Charles Schulz and with additional music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, follows the lovable loser, Charlie Brown, as he searches for the key to happiness with the help of his friends—Snoopy, Schroeder, Linus, Lucy and Sally.

Director, Suzanne Richard; Music Director, Jason McCool; Pianist, Stuart Weich.  Featuring Rob McQuay, James Garland, Will Mincey, Sam Weich, Judy Simmons, and Selene Faer.
